A 22-year old motorcyclist from Kirkland, Washington remains in the hospital at Harborview Medical Center after a collision with a car on Monday. The driver of the car was taken to Evergreen Hospital.
The motorcyle and the car collided when the car turned into a parking lot. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
Motorcycles are treated differently than cars for purposes of Washington’s insurance laws. Auto insurance policies frequently exclude motorcycles from coverage; special coverage must usually be purchased specifically for the motorcycle. RCW 46.30.020, which requires mandatory liability insurance for cars, expressly excludes motorcycles. Under RCW 48.22.030 insurance companies which elect to write motorcycle policies must offer uninsured and underinsured (“UIM”) coverage, which the insured has the option of rejecting.
